Dr Ehida Akharume

Dr Ehida Akharume  is a 2004 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Jackson State University, where she received a B.S. In Biology. While pursuing her degree at JSU, she was involved in several organizations. She was a member of Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society, Alpha Chi Honor Society, and a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. After completing her studies at JSU, she went on to earn her Doctorate of Dental Surgery at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN in 2010. She received a post doctoral certification in Hospital Dentistry by completing a General Practice Residency at Meharry Medical College and Nashville General Hospital, in conjunction with VA Medical Center in 2011. Dr. Akharume strives to live up to the motto of her alma mater to improve the healthcare of the underserved community.

Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn:

  • Discover why some patients are simply not good candidates for veneers, even when they love the look of a dramatic smile transformation.
  • Learn how veneers differ from full coverage crowns and why having healthy existing teeth matters when choosing the right restoration.
  • Find out how habits such as teeth grinding can affect veneers, implants, and the long term success of dental work.
  • Explore the differences between composite and porcelain veneers, including durability, appearance, and cost considerations.
  • Learn why gum contouring may sometimes be necessary before veneers or other cosmetic restorations can be completed.
  • Uncover how dental implants replace missing teeth and why certain health conditions and lifestyle habits can affect whether implants are appropriate.
  • Hear how social media can create unrealistic expectations about veneers, smile makeovers, and what cosmetic dentistry can actually achieve.
  • Gain insight into how dentists balance appearance with chewing, speaking, comfort, and overall oral health when rebuilding a smile.
  • Understand why Dr. Akharume believes comprehensive dental care should focus on keeping patients healthy and confident for years, not simply creating a quick cosmetic result.

In this episode…

Should everyone who wants veneers actually get them? Social media can make cosmetic dentistry look as simple as choosing your favorite smile and asking a dentist to recreate it, but Dr. Ehida Akharume explains why your teeth, habits, oral health, and medical history can completely change what treatment is appropriate. So what happens when the smile you want is not the treatment your mouth needs?

Dr. Akharume breaks down what veneers actually are, how porcelain compares with composite, and why some patients may need crowns or other restorations instead. She also explains how teeth grinding and certain health factors can affect dental implants, and shares why rebuilding a severely damaged smile requires more than creating attractive teeth. The finished result also has to allow the patient to chew and speak properly.

In this episode of Beauty Talk, host Daniel Gouw interviews Dr. Ehida Akharume, a general dentist at Advanced Dental Clinic in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Dr. Akharume earned her DDS from Meharry Medical College and completed a General Practice Residency with certification in Hospital Dentistry. She discusses veneers, cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, smile restoration, patient expectations, social media trends, and why personalized treatment planning matters for both appearance and long term oral health. Tune in to learn how to make informed choices about your health, beauty, and well-being.
